Join us on August 21 to witness and interact with a historic display of The Monument Quilt in Queens. The Monument Quilt is a crowd-sourced collection of thousands of stories of survivors of rape and abuse, alongside messages of love and support from allies in the movement to upset rape culture. By stitching our stories together, we are creating and demanding public space to heal.

The Monument Quilt is a platform to not only tell our stories, but work together to forever change how America responds to rape. We are building a new culture where survivors are publicly supported rather than publicly shamed. The Quilt will be on display from 3-8pm, with remarks by artist and local participants as well as spoken word performances by Shameeka Dream and Lorena Ambrosio (of Mahina Movement) from 5-6pm. Special remarks by visiting guest Mora Fernandez from La Casa Mandarina in Mexico, and NYC Public Advocate Letitia James

Sections of the quilt will be witnessed across the United States through a tour, quilt making workshops, and a historic display in our nation’s capitol. Blanketing over one mile of the National Mall, thousands of fabric squares will be stitched together to spell “€œNOT ALONE”€. The Monument Quilt gives churches, schools, towns and our country clear and accessible steps to support survivors of rape and abuse when, often, people don’t know where to begin. Through public recognition, the quilt reconnects survivors to their community.

Portions of the Queens display include squares made in a workshop “Bordando Historia” with women from Immigrant Movement International, facilitated by Lorena Kourousias and Tennessee Watson, as well  workshops at a sister organization La Casa Mandarina, an itinerant and independent agency, based in Mexico City, devoted to building a culture of peace by empowering people and communities.
