Queens International 2013 Artist Kevin Beasley will animate our Atrium with a new sound performance "€œFrom Ashy to Classy Mix I (Valley of Ashes)"€

This aural work explores the fields of Flushing Meadows Corona Park in an attempt to locate a resonance, residue, and potential activity from various moments in time. The Park, once being an ash dump, has undergone multiple stages of change, difficulty, and prosperity through its use and its immediate community. With the use of audio playback devices, field recordings and sound from archival films of the 1939 and 1964 World's Fairs, a mix will be performed in an attempt to collapse time and matter into one sonic experience; a soundscape paralleling the state of the park-both refined and ill.

Kevin Beasley (b. 1985, Lynchburg, Virginia) holds a B.F.A. from the College for Creative Studies Detroit and an M.F.A. from the Yale University. His work has been shown at Interstate Projects, the Studio Museum, Harlem, the Museum of Modern Art, Danspace Project Inc., and Fred Torres Collaborations in New York, The Butcher's Daughter, Detroit and currently in a group exhibition Realization is Better than Anticipation at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland. He was awarded the Sally Van Lier Trust Fellowship residency in 2012 at the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP), New York. He currently lives in Astoria.
