Join us for a screening of FROM HERE, a documentary film set in the epicenter of today’s global migration debates that follows four young people who represent the future of global citizenry. The screening will be followed by a conversation with director Christina Antonakos-Wallace and Tania Mattos, a Queens-based activist who is featured in the film. 

Set in Berlin and New York, FROM HERE interweaves the stories of Tania, Miman, Sonny and Akim – artists and activists raised in the Global North to parents from the Global South. The film accompanies them as they move from their 20’s into their 30’s, facing major turning points: fighting for citizenship, creating families, surviving violence, and finding creative expression. Shot over the course of ten years, the film captures their struggle to define belonging for themselves in societies increasingly hostile to their existence. Filmed in two of the world’s largest immigration countries–the U.S. and Germany–FROM HERE captures an international generation’s fight for belonging in an era of rising nationalism.

The film will be in English with Spanish subtitles. The conversation will be in English with interpretation in Spanish. Please note: Masks are not required but are strongly encouraged.

About the speakers:

Christina Antonakos-Wallace: Director/Producer/Camera/Editor

Christina is a filmmaker and cultural organizer. Awards include the Euromedia Award for Culture & Diversity (2011), a Media that Matters Change Maker Award (2012), and recognition from the German Alliance for Democracy and Tolerance (2015). Her short films and interactive work has been exhibited in over fifteen countries through festivals, schools, galleries, NGOs, and corporations. Commissions and grants include the New America Foundation, Seattle Office of Arts and Culture, and the German Ministry for Civic Education. She was a Fellow at Hedgebrook (2017) and the Port Townsend Film Festival (2015), and holds a BFA/BA from the New School & Parsons School of Design. Her work was recognized with a five-year MTV Fight For Your Rights Scholarship (2002) and a Humanity in Action Fellowship (2006), which she completed at the United Nations High Commission on Refugees in Berlin. FROM HERE is her first feature-length documentary.

Tania Mattos: Film Protagonist + Activist

Tania is an Aymara descendent, Bolivian-born, Queens-based organizer, and strategist. She joined Envision Freedom with 14 years of experience as an immigrant and worker rights organizer and advocate. As Legislative Coordinator for the New York State Youth Leadership Council, she helped organize the first Education Not Deportation program in New York that stopped the deportation of undocumented youth people. Tania is a co-founder of Queens Neighborhoods United, a grassroots anti-gentrification collective. Tania was a DACA recipient from 2012 to 2019.

Sonny Singh: Film Protagonist + Educator

Sonny is a musician and social justice educator based in Brooklyn, NY. He has been active in movements for social and economic justice since he was a teenager and worked as a labor and community organizer in his 20s. He received his Master’s Degree in Social Justice Education at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and has nearly 20 years of experience facilitating workshops and giving talks on anti-oppression, racial equity, and social justice issues. As a musician, Sonny has brought his fiery trumpet and vocals to audiences around the world as an original member of bhangra brass band Red Baraat. He released his first solo album, Chardi Kala, in 2022.

Únase a nosotros para ver DESDE AQUÍ, una película documental ambientada en el epicentro de los debates sobre migración global de hoy que sigue a cuatro jóvenes que representan el futuro de la ciudadanía global. La proyección será seguida por una conversación con la directora Christina Antonakos-Wallace y Tania Mattos, una activista de Queens que aparece en la película.

Ambientada en Berlín y Nueva York, DESDE AQUÍ entrelaza las historias de Tania, Miman, Sonny y Akim, artistas y activistas criados en el Norte Global con padres del Sur Global. La película los acompaña a medida que pasan de los 20 a los 30, enfrentando importantes puntos de inflexión: luchar por la ciudadanía, crear una familia, sobrevivir a la violencia y encontrar una expresión creativa. Bellamente filmada a lo largo de diez años, la película captura su lucha por definir su pertenencia en sociedades cada vez más hostiles a su existencia. Filmado en dos de los países de inmigración más grandes del mundo, EE. UU. y Alemania, DESDE AQUÍ captura la lucha de una generación internacional por pertenecer a una era de creciente nacionalismo.

El personal de la Comisión de Derechos Humanos de la Ciudad de Nueva York participará en el evento para compartir recursos sobre las protecciones contra la discriminación bajo la Ley de Derechos Humanos de la Ciudad de Nueva York en materia de vivienda, empleo y lugares públicos.

Christina Antonakos-Wallace: Directora/Productora/Cámara/Editora

Christina es cineasta y organizadora cultural. Los premios incluyen el Premio Euromedia para la Cultura y la Diversidad (2011), el Premio Media that Matters Change Maker (2012) y el reconocimiento de la Alianza Alemana para la Democracia y la Tolerancia (2015). Como Coordinadora Legislativa del Consejo de Liderazgo Juvenil del Estado de Nueva York, ayudó a organizar el primer programa Educación, No Deportación en Nueva York que detuvo la deportación de jóvenes indocumentados. Tania es cofundadora de Queens Neighborhoods United, un colectivo de base contra la gentrificación. Tania fue beneficiaria de DACA de 2012 a 2019.
