Once again, the Ecuadorian Film Showcase of New York kicks off its seventh annual event bringing the most diverse and contemporary selection of Ecuadorian cinema to Spanish and English-speaking audiences. This is an initiative made by the Consulate General of Ecuador in New York in co-production with Maravilla, a New York based organization working for a better understanding of South America through cinema and the arts.

Synopsis:
“An Intimate Distance: The Law of the Swindler” is a historical comedy based in 1944, in an Ecuador that hasn’t escaped the arrival of a pair of Nazis. The film tells the story of Bernardo José RiofrÃo, an insignificant bachelor who works in a bank and lives under the unbearable shadow of his sick mother. If that weren’t enough, he’s wildly in love with Pepita, the prettiest nurse in the city. Then his life changes radically one day when Kurt Mainzel, an important German Nazi who happens to be his mother’s doctor, proposes robbing a bank in order to buy Reichsmark, the official currency of the Third Reich. And he’ll try it to win Pepita’s heart…
Sinopsis:
Distante CercanÃa es la historia de un insignificante hombrecillo que en 1945 pasa de ser un simple empleado bancario a convertirse en banquero y alcalde de San Francisco de Yumbaña, un olvidado pueblo de los Andes ecuatorianos.Un dÃa cualquiera su vida cambia radicalmente de rumbo cuando el doctor Kurt Mainzel, un médico alemán residente desde años en Quito, pide su ayuda para un fraudulento megocio: sustraer dinero del banco para comprar Reichsmark, la moneda oficial del IIIer Reich. El médico alemán está convencido que se puede hacer un buen negocio con la moneda oficial del régimen Nazi “destinado a dominar muy pronto al mundo entero”. Pepita, la sensual enfermera de Mainzel, es la encargada de convencer a RiofrÃo.
