Please join us for the opening weekend of the community-engaged art project HamacaS by ArtBuilt Studio in the Park artist in residency Liene Bosquê.

The mobile studio info sessions will take place on Saturday and Sunday from 1 – 4pm. The presentation by community crochet and embroidery group Bordeando will take place on Sunday at 12noon.

ArtBuilt Studio in the Park is a six-week residency program that provides an artist or artist collective use of our 150-square-foot mobile studio space in a public park for a community-engaged art project. HamacaS will be an interactive installation of looms and hand-woven hammocks that aims to capture the physical and emotional displacement experienced by immigrants in the United States. It will consist of free English and Spanish language workshops in which participants engage in a collective hammock weaving installation. The hammock installation will act as a safe and healing space for the participants by reconnecting them with process of making something by hand and offering a space to lay down. The goal of HamacaS is to foment the discussion on issues of immigration and resilience and its relation to art.

The opening weekend will feature welcome sessions to the ArtBuilt Studio in the Park with artist Liene Bosquê, and a public installation by the community embroidery and crochet group Bordeando.

Bordeando will present a series of large embroidery and crochet pieces that will be displayed along a sensory trail in Queens to promote biking and exercises. The pieces will be displayed on bike parking, fences, balconies, trees of the neighborhood, including areas with bike lanes.  They will included aspect of sensory or environmental explorations like sound / nature / environmental quality monitoring. Embroidery and knitting are cultural practices for almost every ancient culture. These are unique ways for storytelling, sharing and recording cultural events.  This is true of the backgrounds of many people living in immigrant communities of Queens. Living in New York City poses a challenge to the continuation of these arts, because of time pressures and the many distractions of city life. This program convenes a group of Queens based amateur and professional textile artists working in crochet and embroidery, organized by Queens Museum’s community organizer Monica Carrillo. Bordeando will constitute one of the participating community groups that will share their knowledge, skills and creativity as participants of HamacaS.

Over the course of the 6 week residency the public is invited to co-create and enjoy HamacaS, an interactive installation, by participating in a series of public weaving workshops.

Regular OPEN Hours, Oct.1 – Nov.15:

Wednesdays + Fridays, 10am – 12noon
Mayan weaving technique workshop series for community members, advanced weaving skills developed over course of 5 weeks

Saturdays + Sundays, 1 – 4pm 
Open Studio Drop in Workshops, basic weaving techniques, no previous skills required
