Latino Americans: 500 Years of History, produced by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the American Library Association (ALA), is a nationwide public programming initiative that supports the exploration of the rich and varied history and experiences of Latinos, who have helped shape the United States over the last five centuries and who have become, with more than 50 million people, the country’s largest minority group. The cornerstone of the project is the six-part, NEH-supported 2013 PBS documentary film, Latino Americans. The award-winning series chronicles Latinos in the United States from the 16th century to present day.

In May, we are collaborating with Immigrant Movement International in Corona to screen episode 6, Peril and Promise. The episode takes viewers through the past 30 years, with a second wave of Cubans arriving in Miami during the Mariel exodus and with hundreds of thousands Salvadorans, Nicaraguans and Guatemalans fleeing civil wars, death squads and unrest to go north into a new land — transforming the United States along the way. Afterwards, stay for an open conversation about the alternative ways of healing among the Latino population with Dr, Anahí Viladrich.

Anahí Viladrich (Queens College & The Graduate Center, The City University of New York)
