Joining Struggles IMI Corona Exhibition 2015-2016

07.01.16 – 07.23.16

Community Partnership Exhibition Program

A white exhibition wall with milk crates hanging in a cross shape. The outer facing surface of the crates have been spray painted, starting from the center and radiating out, yellow, orange, white, blue, green, and yellow again. Around the cross are paper cut out images of community members and famous people wearing La Calavera face paint. Propped up on the milk crate cross is a black, round sign with a brown power fist and the phrase “Corazón Indígena Por Las Vida Negras”. Below, at the gallery floor, is a row of chakra candles in different colors.

Immigrant Movement International (IMI) Corona is a volunteer-led community space for alternative education, a think tank for debate and action by people’s philosophers to re-imagine the role of (im)migrants in society and to change unjust situations, and a laboratory for the merging of arts and activism. IMI Corona is supported by the Queens Museum and is composed by and serves primarily the low income, latin@ and indigenous mixed-status migrant community from Corona, Elmhurst and Jackson Heights. Since 2014 IMI Corona has been led by the Community Council an inter-generational body that exists to help us break the doors that lock us in, so that our mind can fly more, so that we can connect our experiences and imagine new ways to live, to follow our dreams, and to fight and struggle together to make them a reality. We are a group that is sharpening skills to organize and be active in the social justice movement based on the needs of (im)migrant mothers, women, children, and young people that are the majority of participants of IMI Corona.

Being our first show at the Queens Museum’s Partnership Gallery, Joining Struggles showcases all of our work for the past year. For 2015-2016, we decided to do work to raise awareness around police brutality, bridge solidarity among brown, migrant, indigenous and black communities, as well as challenge anti-black racism within our own communities. We also made a decision to focus on working beyond our walls and going into the streets and our community. We worked to begin organizing around justice in schools, and continuing to challenge sexism within our community, fostering the leadership of women and girls. In addition to the work of the Community Council displayed in this exhibition, we are proud to present the work of 4 IMI Corona workshops that are working strongly around these issues as well: Mujeres en Movimiento (Women in Movement), Ñukanchik Llacta Wawakuna (Beautiful Girls from our Land), Mobile Print Power and Project Luz. In collaboration with multiple guest artists and local and emerging artists, we have created community forums, art installations, large public events, marches and protests revolving around the lives of those affect by police violence, as well as the lives of (im)migrant mothers and children from our neighborhood.

We welcome you to interact with our art and continue to document our hxrstory by using the hashtag #UniendoLuchas #JoiningStruggles #IMICorona @IMICorona and we invite you to join the struggle by coming to IMI Corona meetings, events and workshops.

Uniendo Luchas
