“And the Verdict Is …” Spring 2018 Film Series

Do the facts lead to truth, and does truth lead to justice? This 8-week series focuses on movies that address the legal system, foregrounding questions of ethics, gender, and race.
Each movie is introduced by Mark Ethan Toporek, who also leads a post-screening discussion. He is a member of the Actors’ Studio, who has appeared in films including “The Secret Lives of Dentists,” “The Confession” and “Lesser Prophets.” He has been presenting the Film Series at 92Y since 2003 and at the Queens Museum since 1998.
March 14 The Fortune Cookie (1966), directed by Billy Wilder 125 minutes. Jack Lemmon plays a TV cameraman injured during a football game and encouraged by his lawyer (Walter Matthau, in an Oscar winning performance) to exaggerate his condition for insurance purposes.
March 21 Erin Brockovich (2000), directed by Steven Soderbergh, 131 minutes. Julia Roberts won the Academy Award for playing an unemployed single mother of three who becomes a legal assistant in one of the biggest class action suits in history. Also starring Albert Finney.
This film series takes place in the second-floor theater and is free with Queens Museum admission and open to the general public (with a special invitation to older adults).
