Join us for a conversation between Aliza Nisenbaum and some of the Queens-based organizers and artists she’s worked with in the borough over the last decade. 

The discussion will feature three participants from Nisenbaum’s recent five-month painting workshop: Arte e Identidad: Un Taller de Pintura con Aliza Nisenbaum: Emma Confesor, Miguel Flores, and Luz Caicedo. The participants will be joined by Veronica Ramirez, the founder of Mujeres en Movimiento who originally studied with Nisenbaum in a workshop she offered at Immigrant Movement International, Corona in 2012 and whom she’s painted repeatedly over the years. 

Moderated by Queens Museum Community Organizer Gianina Enriquez, the conversation will look at how the process of being portrayed in a painting and learning artmaking skills impacts one’s relationship to self and to community building. It will explore what may be absorbed in an artwork and what may be absorbed in a life.

The program will begin with a special screening of the new short documentary film on Aliza Nisenbaum by Art21.

This conversation will be in Spanish with simultaneous interpretation to English.

Speakers Bios:

Luz A. Caicedo was born in Bogota, Cundinamarca, Colombia. She immigrated to the USA in 1998 to New York City with her 5-year-old daughter, María Paula. She was a single mother until 2013 when she married Samir G. Urdinola. An economist and architect, she developed her love for the community working at Iglesia Nueva Vida Internacional in Woodside NYC. She currently works at Commonpoint Queens, an organization that supports the community and offers services for its neighbors. Luz is passionate about art and painting.

Emma Confesor was born in Atlixco Puebla, Mexico and has lived in Corona, Queens for 26 years. She has 3 children and for many years dedicated herself to being a housewife and mother. In recent years she has become increasingly involved in social assistance and community organizing. Emma is a leader and volunteer with the La Jornada and Queens Museum Cultural Food Pantry. She volunteers with several other local community organizations and has participated in political campaigns in support of immigrant rights.

Miguel Flores is Ecuadorian from the province of Cañar Cantón Biblán. He studied at the La Canterita School of Arts and the State University of Cuenca Faculty of Arts specializing in Plastic Arts. He teaches drawing and painting workshops to children and young people. His experience includes making murals in his hometown, restoring religious murals in churches, and participating in different exhibitions. Miguel lives in New York and is married with three children.

Veronica Ramirez is the founder and leader of Mujeres en Movimiento, a self-organized group that explores the use of dance, art, ancestral remedies, and civic engagement to collectively empower immigrant women around the world and in Corona, Queens.

Aliza Nisenbaum paints portraits that are the manifestation of exchanges with her subjects taking place over time. Distinct social groups are at the foreground of her work, including immigrants, members of grassroot organizations, and health workers. She engages with these groups on various levels, sharing resources, skills, and ultimately, social representation. Recently her exhibition at the Tate Liverpool (2021) featured a series of portraits of UK healthcare workers, and featured subway workers in a public mural project for the Art on the Underground Commission in London (2019). Previous solo shows include Anton Kern Gallery, New York, NY (2019) and the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, MN (2017). Nisenbaum is currently completing commission work for Queens Museum and Delta Air Lines (Terminal C at LaGuardia Airport) representing a large group of professionals in the industry.

Nisenbaum’s work has been included in notable group exhibitions including: Gwangju Biennale, South Korea (April 2023); the Museu de Arte de São Paulo, Brazil (2020); the Drawing Center, New York, NY (2020); the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA (2019) and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA (2018). She has also presented her work at The Whitney Biennial (2017); the Biennial of the Americas, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver, CO (2015); and XV Rufino Tamayo Painting Biennial, Mexico City, D.F (2012). Her work is found in collections including the Tate, The Hirshhorn Museum, The Kemper Museum of Art, The San Diego Museum of Art, The Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among many othe private and public collections.

About Arte e Identidad: Un Taller de Pintura con Aliza Nisenbaum

Arte e Identidad: Un Taller de Pintura con Aliza Nisenbaum was a workshop series created for volunteers with the La Jornada and Queens Museum Cultural Food Pantry and taught by Aliza Nisenbaum at Queens Museum between September 2022 and March 2023. The series taught the fundamentals of drawing and painting while exploring issues of art, identity, agency, and language. With a responsive syllabus designed around participants’ interests, an initial overview of introductory art history evolved into an artmaking and conversation series that explored topics of immigration, belonging, color, and aesthetics. The workshop offered instruction in art making techniques and provided a social space to share stories. Resulting works from participants in Arte e Identidad: Un Taller de Pintura con Aliza Nisenbaum are exhibited as part of Aliza Nisenbaum: Queens, Lindo y Querido.

Únase a nosotros para una conversación entre Aliza Nisenbaum y algunos de los organizadores y artistas de Queens con los que ha trabajado en el distrito durante la última década.

Se explorará lo que puede absorberse en una obra de arte y lo que puede absorberse en una vida.

Biografías del orador:

Luz A Caicedo nació en Bogotá-Cundinamarca-Colombia. Emigró a USA 1998 a la ciudad de NY con su hija de 5 años, María Paula. Madre soltera desde entonces hasta el año 2013 hasta que se casó con Samir G.Urdinola. Economista y arquitecta colombiana desarrolló su amor por la comunidad laborando en la Iglesia Nueva Vida Internacional en Woodside NYC. Actualmente trabaja en la organización Commonpoint Queens apoyando a la comunidad y ofreciendo servicios para los vecinos. Luz es apasionada por el arte y la pintura.

Se ha desempeñado dando talleres de dibujo y pintura a niños y jóvenes. Ha realizado murales en su ciudad natal, así como también ha restaurado murales religiosos en iglesias y ha participado en diferentes exposiciones. Miguel vive en New York, está casado y tiene tres hijos.

Veronica Ramirez es fundadora y líder de Mujeres en Movimiento, un grupo autoorganizado que explora el uso de la danza, el arte, los remedios ancestrales y el compromiso cívico para empoderar colectivamente a las mujeres inmigrantes alrededor del mundo y en Corona, Queens.

Aliza Nisenbaum pinta retratos que son la manifestación de intercambios con sus sujetos que se producen a lo largo del tiempo. Distintos grupos sociales están en el primer plano de su trabajo, incluidos inmigrantes indocumentados, miembros de organizaciones de base y trabajadores de la salud. Ella se involucra con estos grupos en varios niveles, compartiendo recursos, habilidades y, en última instancia, representación social. Acerca de Arte e Identidad: Un Taller de Pintura con Aliza Nisenbaum

Arte e Identidad: Un Taller de Pintura con Aliza Nisenbaum fue una serie de talleres creado para voluntarios con La Jornada y Queens Museum Despensa Cultural de Alimentos impartida por Aliza Nisenbaum en el Queens Museum entre septiembre de 2022 y marzo de 2023. La serie enseñó los fundamentos del dibujo y la pintura mientras exploraba cuestiones de arte, identidad, agencia y lenguaje. Con un programa de estudios receptivo diseñado en torno a los intereses de los participantes, una descripción general inicial de la historia del arte evolucionó hasta convertirse en una serie de conversaciones y creación artística que exploró temas de inmigración, pertenencia, color y estética. El taller ofreció instrucción en técnicas de creación de arte y brindó un espacio social para compartir historias.
