Inauguration Ceremonies from Around the Borough and the Globe

Target Wide Open Weekend at the Queens Museum begins with inauguration ceremonies from around the borough and the globe. This will be the opportunity for communities to tell us how they would open a building and bless our new space. How do you inaugurate a space in India, Bulgaria, Mexico, or Taiwan? Inauguration by Queens International 2013 (QI) artist Vlada Tomova“€˜s Bulgarian Women’s Choir Greetings and Blessings will start the ceremonies.

QI artist Lynley Bernstein“€˜s Fishing for the Elusive Snakehead, a 2.5-hour guided fishing trip in search of the infamous Snakehead fish identified by the city authority to inhabit waterways in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Once caught, it must be submitted to the city. Gears and Baits provided.

Poets in the Galleries: Tan Lin
The Poets in the Galleries series utilizes the Museum’s exhibition space as an invigorating site for exploration, interactive readings and discussions. For four Saturdays in November and December 2013, a different poet will conduct a lively presentation in response to the Museum’s current biennial of Queens-based artists, Queens International 2013.

Today features poet Tan Lin. Tan Lin is the author of Lotion Bullwhip Giraffe, BlipSoak01, Ambience is a Novel with a Logo, Heath (Plagiarism/Outsource), 7 Controlled Vocabularies and Obituary 2004 and The Joy of Cooking (2010). His work has appeared in numerous journals including Conjunctions, Artforum, Cabinet, New York Times Book Review, Art in America, and Purple. His video, theatrical and LCD work have been shown at the Marianne Boesky Gallery, Yale Art Museum, Sophienholm Museum (Copenhagen), Ontological Hysterical Theatre, and as part of the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Soundcheck Series. Lin is the recipient of a Getty Distinguished Scholar Grant for 2004-2005 and a Warhol Foundation/Creative Capital Arts Writing Grant to complete a book-length study of the writings of Andy Warhol. He has taught at the University of Virginia and Cal Arts, and currently teaches creative writing at New Jersey City University.

Community Pilgrimage

Community members and collaborators are invited to assemble in Corona Plaza, a new DOT Pedestrian Plaza the Museum has been programming and designing, and then process to the Queens Museum accompanied by marching bands. Neighborhood folkloric dance groups and musicians reflecting the diverse immigrant communities in the neighborhoods near the Museum will perform throughout the day, complementing an array of performances, screenings, and workshops by various participating artists in Queens International 2013.

As the Grand Finale of our three day re-opening celebration, Target Wide Open Weekend, the Queens Museum is offering families with children ages 5 “€“ 12 free admission to explore our newly expanded space! Guests are invited to drop in and participate in a variety of fun and educational hands-on art making activities and one-of -a-kind artist projects. In addition, there will be a Museum-wide scavenger hunt to help guide visitors through the Museum’s permanent and feature exhibitions.

Participants from the Museum’s New New Yorker program invite you to take a photograph in a photo booth inspired by the Futurama Exhibition at the 1939 and 1964 New York World’s Fairs.

Explore the Museum’s giant scale model of New York City with the help of Panorama experts from the Museum’s Queens Teens program.

Participants from the Museum’s Queens Teens program invite you to create your own puppet inspired by the Unisphere, the iconic symbol of the 1964 World’s Fair and the exhibition Peter Schumann: The Shatterer.

Circuit Bending Workshop in the Unisphere Gallery with Drew Blanke
Build, destroy and rebuild basic circuitry and come up with your own electronic configurations. In this workshop you will learn the basics of conductivity and gadgetry using basic electronic components. LEDs, diodes, sensors, all this words will make sense after you finish this activity.

Korean Brush Painting, Studio A with Seongmin Ahn
Make magnetic decorations out of traditional Korean Brush painting techniques. In this workshop you will be working with traditional ink, colors and paper to make all kinds of decorative objects.

QI artist from the Bulgarian Collaborative , Meglena Zapreva, will be at the Flip-House, a special installation that also functions as a space for artmaking and exhibition. Join her for Smuggle Tactics: Imaginary International Community Garden, an art making workshop.

Rethinking the 14th Day of November 1947
Artist Heng-Gil Han invited Korean Americans in Queens and metropolitan areas of New York City to submit their ideas and visions about their home country’s future. This event is a symbolic response to the fact that Koreans were not invited to speak to the UN General Assembly when this international body met in the Queens Museum’s very building to make this monumental decision about Korea’s future on November 14, 1947.

Stephen Motika is the editor of Tiresias: The Collected Poems of Leland Hickman (2009) and the author of the poetry chapbooks Arrival and At Mono (2007) and In the Madrones (2011). Recent work has appeared in At Length, The Brooklyn Review, Eleven Eleven, The Boog City Reader 4, and The Poetry Project Newsletter. Musician and Writer Franklin Bruno and surprise guests will read and perform from his new book The Accordion Repertoire. Followed by book-signing and light refreshments.

Pedro Reyes: The People’s United Nations (pUN)

Tours every half hour from 12:30 to 4:30pm. Online sign-up starts November 1.

pUN brings together 193 citizen representatives of the 193 members of the (real) United Nations for games and discussion over the course of two days. Guided tours offer an exciting opportunity to discover pUN Headquarters and include a behind-the-scenes view of the Organization at work. Exhibitions feature sculptural displays on important topics on the pUN agenda, such as peace, dialogue, disarmament and sustainability. Tours will be conducted by trained pUN volunteers.

Visitors may also view pUN proceedings from designated areas on the Museum’s first and second floors. No sign-up necessary.
