Join us for a series of painting workshops led by Aliza Nisenbaum and participants of Arte e Identidad: Un Taller de Pintura con Aliza Nisenbaum. This first workshop will be on color led by Aliza Nisenbaum. 

Of all the elements of visual perception color is the one that is most subjective and relative. Artists use it to convey mood and optics. This class will focus on the way in which one can become sensitive to hue, saturation, brilliance, and the relationships of colors within a composition. Participants will create works that deal with color for its expressive and formal potential and contextualize color in regards to cultural associations and historical works of art. 

Participation is limited to 10 people and advance registration is required. Materials will be provided. The workshop will be conducted in Spanish and English. Registration opens at 12pm on April 23, 2023. Please register here.

About Arte e Identidad: Un Taller de Pintura con Aliza Nisenbaum

Arte e Identidad: Un Taller de Pintura con Aliza Nisenbaum was a workshop series created for volunteers with the La Jornada and Queens Museum Cultural Food Pantry and taught by Aliza Nisenbaum at Queens Museum between September 2022 and March 2023. The series taught the fundamentals of drawing and painting while exploring issues of art, identity, agency, and language. With a responsive syllabus designed around participants’ interests, an initial overview of introductory art history evolved into an artmaking and conversation series that explored topics of immigration, belonging, color, and aesthetics. The workshop offered instruction in art making techniques and provided a social space to share stories. Resulting works from participants in Arte e Identidad: Un Taller de Pintura con Aliza Nisenbaum are exhibited as part of Aliza Nisenbaum: Queens, Lindo y Querido.

About the artist:

Aliza Nisenbaum paints portraits that are the manifestation of exchanges with her subjects taking place over time. Distinct social groups are at the foreground of her work, including  immigrants, members of grassroot organizations, and health workers. She engages with these groups on various levels, sharing resources, skills, and ultimately, social representation. Recently her exhibition at the Tate Liverpool (2021) featured a series of portraits of UK healthcare workers, and featured subway workers in a public mural project for the Art on the Underground Commission in London (2019). Previous solo shows include Anton Kern Gallery, New York, NY (2019) and the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, MN (2017). Nisenbaum is currently completing commission work for Queens Museum and Delta Air Lines (Terminal C at LaGuardia Airport) representing a large group of professionals in the industry. 

Nisenbaum’s work has been included in notable group exhibitions including: Gwangju Biennale, South Korea (April 2023); the Museu de Arte de São Paulo, Brazil (2020); the Drawing Center, New York, NY (2020); the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA (2019) and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA (2018). She has also presented her work at The Whitney Biennial (2017); the Biennial of the Americas, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver, CO (2015); and XV Rufino Tamayo Painting Biennial, Mexico City, D.F (2012). Her work is found in collections including the Tate, The Hirshhorn Museum, The Kemper Museum of Art, The San Diego Museum of Art, The Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among many other private and public collections.

Queens, Lindo y Querido Talleres de Pintura: Color con Aliza Nisenbaum

Únase a nosotros para una serie de talleres de pintura en la galería dirigidos por Aliza Nisenbaum y participantes de Arte e Identidad: Un Taller de Pintura con Aliza Nisenbaum. Este primer taller será sobre el color a cargo de Aliza Nisenbaum.

De todos los elementos de la percepción visual el color es el más subjetivo y relativo. Los artistas lo usan para transmitir el estado de ánimo y la óptica. Esta clase se centrará en la forma en que uno puede volverse sensible al tono, la saturación, el brillo y las relaciones de los colores dentro de una composición. Los participantes crearán obras que aborden el color por su potencial expresivo, formal y contextualizarán el color en relación con asociaciones culturales y obras de arte históricas.

Acerca de Arte e Identidad: Un Taller de Pintura con Aliza Nisenbaum

Arte e Identidad: Un Taller de Pintura con Aliza Nisenbaum fue una serie de talleres creado para voluntarios con La Jornada y Queens Museum Despensa Cultural de Alimentos impartida por Aliza Nisenbaum en el Queens Museum entre septiembre de 2022 y marzo de 2023. La serie enseñó los fundamentos del dibujo y la pintura mientras exploraba cuestiones de arte, identidad, agencia y lenguaje. Con un programa de estudios receptivo diseñado en torno a los intereses de los participantes, una descripción general inicial de la historia del arte evolucionó hasta convertirse en una serie de conversaciones y creación artística que exploró temas de inmigración, pertenencia, color y estética. Aliza Nisenbaum pinta retratos que son la manifestación de intercambios con sus sujetos que se producen a lo largo del tiempo.
