All performances free on a first come basis. Doors open 30 mins prior to showtime. No tickets or RSVPs required.

Performances are in spanish with english supratitles. Panel discussions are in english with simultaneous spanish interpretation.

 

Los Angeles Poverty Department (LAPD) was founded on LA’s Skid Row in 1985. They create performances that connect the experience of people living in poverty to the social forces that shape their lives.

Agentes & Activos, a Spanish-language version of LAPD’s best known work, Agents & Assets,   is in two parts.

First, members of LAPD and members of Drogadictos Anónimos (DA), a Queens-based recovery group, reenact a 1998 House of Representatives hearing on allegations that the CIA was complicit in crack cocaine trafficking into the Los Angeles area. This means that cast members–most of whom have been directly impacted by drugs–speak the words of the people who made drug policy.

Second, people with knowledge of the subject connect the performance to concerns here and now, and open up a conversation with everyone in the room.  The issues addressed range from local and international drug policy, to organizing for humane and sustainable alternatives to the “€œdrug war”€, to harm reduction and public health.

Agents & Assets was first performed in Los Angeles in 2001 and has toured internationally.

The performances and panels are part of Do you want the cosmetic version or do you want the real deal? Los Angeles Poverty Department, 1985 – 2014, an exhibition at the Queens Museum from January 31 to May 11, 2014.  The project is supported by grants from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and National Endowment for the Arts. Project funding also provided bythe  Surdna Foundation and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Additional support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Open A.I.R. Artist Services Workshops are made possible by a generous grant from The Scherman Foundation’s Katharine S. and Axel G. Rosin Fund.  Special thanks to Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural Center for providing theater space at cost, and to the Langston Hughes Library of the Queens Public Library System for complimentary access to their auditorium.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Queens Museum and Autonomedia are proud to co-publish Agents and Assets: Witnessing the war on drugs and on communities, a publication focused on a decade of Agents and Assets performances and conversations.

Todas las presentaciones son gratuitas y abiertas al público.  Las puertas abren 30 minutos en avance de la hora indicada.  Boletos y reservaciones no son necesarias. 

Las presentaciones teatrales serán en español con supratítulos en inglés.  Las charlas serán en inglés con interpretación simultánea al español. 

 

Los Angeles Poverty Department (LAPD) es un grupo de teatro fundado en el área de Skid Row en la ciudad de Los Angeles en el 1985. Crean obras de teatro que conectan la experienca de personas viviendo en pobreza a las fuerzas sociales que afectan sus vidas.

Agentes y Activos, la versión en español de la obra más conocida de LAPD, Agents and Assets, se presenta en dos partes.

Primero, miembros de LAPD y miembros de Drogadictos Anónimos (DA), un grupo de rehabilitación de la drogadicción basado en Queens, recrean una audiencia de la Casa de Representantes en el 1998 que discutió las acusaciones hechas a  la CIA (la Agecia de Inteligencia Central) por haber sido cómplice del tráfico de cocaína en el área de Los Angeles.  En otras palabras, los que son parte del reparto de la obra, miembros del LAPD y DA”€”quienes en su mayoría han sido directamente impactados por las drogas”€”hablan las palabras de los oficiales responsables de crear políticas públicas de control de drogas.

En segundo lugar, personas con conocimiento del tema conectan la presentación a las preocupaciones del aquí y ahora, y abren la conversación con la gente en el auditorio.  Los temas tratados en las charlas abarcan las políticas públicas de regulación de las drogas en el plano  local e internacional, propuestas de organización por alternativas más humanas y sostenibles a la “€œguerra contra las drogras”€, pasando por temas de reducción de  riesgos y la salud pública.

Agents & Assets fue originalmente presentada en Los Angeles en el 2001 y ha ido de gira  internacionalmente.
