On Memorials

07.14.19, 2:30 pm

Join us for an afternoon of gallery and studio talks, performance, and conversation focused on the work of QM-Jerome Foundation Emerging Artist Fellow Alexandria Smith, QM Studio Program artist Lachell Workman, composer Liz Gré and musician Maurisa Mansaray! On Memorials is presented as part of the Alternatives & Futures series of dynamic public programs that delve deeper into the themes, contexts, and aesthetics that have informed Queens Museum’s Spring 2019 Exhibitions.

2:30pm: Open studio talk by artist Lachell Workman in the QM Studio Program

3pm At Council; Found Peace collaborative performance as part of Alexandria Smith’s Monuments to an Effigy, featuring Liz Gré, Maurisa Mansaray, and Alexandria Smith

At Council; Found Peace (Liz Gré, 2019) is an original composition for cello, soprano, and spoken voice that incorporates the poetry of Gwendolyn Brooks with gospel tonality. The sound performance explores the process of seeking clarity and guidance from those who came before: our mothers, our ancestors, our heroes and predecessors that thrived and persevered in another time.

3:30pm: Post-performance gallery talk by artist Alexandria Smith on Monuments to an Effigy, joined by collaborators Liz Gré and Maurisa Mansaray

4pm: On Memorials conversation with Alexandria Smith, Lachell Workman, Liz Gré and Maurisa Mansaray. Followed by audience Q+A.

On Memorials highlights the intersections between each of the artists’ practices whose work has continued to unfold at Queens Museum this season, as they reflect on memorials from the perspective of place, practice, ritual, and visibility. How do we memorialize, honor, reclaim, and amplify the stories that have been systematically excluded? How do we demonstrate memorializing as a collective act against erasure?
