Event - Mapeando

Mapeando

05.24.22, 10:00 am

“Mapeando” is a project that aims to share journeys of immigration, depicted on a map. At the same time we do an “emotional cleaning”. The word “Mapeando” (mapping) alludes to the Spanglish word “mapear”  (to mop).  Mapeando would like to be the spark that starts a larger conversation among immigrant communities about belonging and nostalgia.

Niceli Portugal is a multidisciplinary Peruvian artist, educator, and community organizer based in Brooklyn. In her work she finds connections between images, words, languages,  and cultures. She creates multicultural and multilingual spaces for families to make art. She has worked with Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling and Queens Museum. Niceli is the Director of Escuelita en Casa, providing free tutoring and art classes to families in the United States and Latin America. She is also the Co-founder of Sew Sisters creating income for undocumented women during the pandemic.

This is a New New Yorkers workshop. This workshop is free but you need to register. Please send an email with the subject “Mapping” to ggaraycochea@queensmuseum.org to RSVP.

“Mapeando” es un proyecto que pretende compartir trayectos de inmigración representados en un mapa, al mismo tiempo que hacemos una “limpieza emocional”. La palabra “Mapeando” también hace alusión a la palabra en  spanglish “mapear” (trapear). Mapeando quisiera ser la chispa que inicie una conversación más amplia entre las comunidades de inmigrantes sobre pertenencia y nostalgia.
