3-5pm: YoU Community Partner BordeAndo presenta su instalación Feelings in Community, seguida de un círculo de conversación sobre cómo procesar el dolor colectivo mediante el uso de artes textiles tradicionales.

No puedo no estar lamentándose: LLORA CHILLA GRITA CANTA, es interpretado por un coro de mujeres que se moverán entre el discurso y la canción, utilizando a la heroína trágica griega Elektra como punto central para hablar de la pérdida ambigua que todos hemos experimentado durante la pandemia de Covid-19. 

 

Esta actuación es posible en parte por el Queens Council on the Arts con fondos públicos del Departamento de Asuntos Culturales de la Ciudad de Nueva York en asociación con el Ayuntamiento.

BordeAndo presenta Feelings in Community, una instalación de bordados realizados por un colectivo de aproximadamente 35 mujeres. BordeAndo utiliza las artes textiles tradicionales como marco para reunirse en comunidad y construir un espacio de sanación. Dadas las inmensas luchas y pérdidas que la comunidad ha enfrentado durante la pandemia de COVID19, esta práctica es una plataforma muy necesaria para expresar los deseos y sueños de cada miembro del grupo.

 

Feelings in Community es una colcha compuesta por 70 trabajos bordados individualmente que representan una boca. La imagen de la boca⁠ —una herramienta primaria de expresión, que ha estado cubierta por máscaras durante los últimos 1,5 años— es un símbolo de los procesos emocionales por los que atravesaron las mujeres inmigrantes durante la crisis de salud.

 

La presentación de este nuevo trabajo a la vista en el Queens Museum, estará acompañada de un círculo de conversación con la comunidad extendida sobre el duelo y las prácticas del duelo.

 

Este programa está organizado en asociación con Reimagine y Artistas ’Grief Deck por el Artists’ Literacies Institute.

El Artists ’Literacies Institute es una agencia para artistas en un mundo poscapitalista y un recurso para que las organizaciones humanicen y reconstruyan sistemas. ALI reformula la práctica artística como investigación y luego diseña compromisos y enredos para artistas en sistemas sociales y cívicos. The Artists ’Grief Deck es la respuesta de ALI a la pandemia, en colaboración con la artista Adriene Jenik y las Organizaciones Voluntarias Activas en Desastres de la Ciudad de Nueva York. Es un conjunto de 60 “tarjetas didácticas” de formato medio diseñadas individualmente por artistas, a veces en colaboración con trabajadores del duelo. Estas son acciones conmemorativas y procesuales que le dan al individuo algo que hacer: un gesto, un pequeño gesto. actuación, un movimiento, un acto de atención plena, en memoria de alguien o algo cuya pérdida está sufriendo. Desde su primera edición en septiembre de 2020, las barajas se han entregado a trabajadores del duelo, organizaciones comunitarias y proveedores de servicios de todo el mundo.

PROGRAM DETAILS:

2-2:45pm: I cannot not grieve: CRY SCREAM SHOUT SING is performed by a chorus of women who will move between speech and song, utilizing the Greek tragic heroine Elektra as a center point to speak to the ambiguous loss we have all experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic.

 

This performance is made possible in part by the Queens Council on the Arts with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

BordeAndo presents Feelings in Community, an installation of embroidery pieces made by a collective of approximately 35 women. BordeAndo uses traditional textile arts as a framework for gathering in community and building a healing space. Given the immense struggles and loss the community has faced throughout the COVID19 pandemic, this practice is a much needed platform for expressing the wishes and dreams of each member of the group.

 

Feelings in Community is a quilt composed of 70 individually embroidered works representing a mouth. The image of the mouth⁠—a primary tool of expression, that has been covered by masks for the past 1,5 years⁠—is symbolic of the emotional processes that immigrant women went through during the health crisis.

 

The presentation of this new work on view at Queens Museum, will be accompanied by a conversation circle with the extended community about grief and practices of grieving.

 

This program is organized in partnership with Reimagine and Artists’ Grief Deck by Artists’ Literacies Institute. 

 

Reimagine helps all people face adversity, loss, and mortality, and channel the hard parts of life into meaningful action and growth. Reimagine envisions a world where we can embrace life fully—from this moment through the end—and collectively contribute to a more just and compassionate society. We host community-driven experiences that bring creativity, connection, and essential conversation about life and death, illness and loss, love and connection to communities around the world. 

 

Artists’ Literacies Institute is an agency for artists in a post-capitalist world, and a resource for organizations to humanize and rebuild systems. ALI reframes artistic practice as research, and then designs engagements and entanglements for artists in social and civic systems.  The Artists’ Grief Deck  is ALI’s response to the pandemic, in collaboration with artist Adriene Jenik, and the NYC Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster.  It is a set of 60 medium format ‘flashcards’ individually designed by artists, sometimes in collaboration with grief workers. One side displays an original artwork, created by artists from around the world responding to our open call, and on the reverse is a ‘grieving prompt.’  These are memorial and processual actions that give the individual something to do – a gesture, a tiny performance, a movement, an act of mindfulness – in memoriam for someone or something whose loss they are grieving. Since its first edition in September 2020, the decks have been disbursed to grief workers, community organizations, and service providers around the world.
