Presented by Unit 25: Building Culture (Spitzer School of Architecture), this first Year of Uncertainty Talk (YoU Talk) will delve into the artistic practices of Raúl Cárdenas Osuna (Torolab) and Guadalupe Maravilla (YoU Co-Thinker). Both artists engage with distinct forms of responding to trauma and violence – Raúl Cárdenas Osuna in his native Tijuana, Mexico, where he founded the artist collective Torolab in 1995, and Guadalupe Maravilla in the New York City area, where they arrived in the 1980s as an unaccompanied, undocumented child fleeing the Salvadoran Civil War and later in life, fought and survived cancer. Both artists engage with aspects of direct community organizing, collective performativity, and sculptural / spatial practices, often leveraging opportunities within contemporary art spaces to engage their community networks and healing practices. The two presentations will be followed by open conversation and Q&A. The conversation has been curated by Vyjayanthi Rao (Adj. Associate Professor, Spitzer School of Architecture).

In an act of decentering the dominance of the English language, this program will be presented in Spanish with Spanish-English interpretation services. The talk will be recorded and shared on the Queens Museum YouTube channel with English captions. 

Unit 25: Building Culture is a year-long research unit taught by Nandini Bagchee and Vyjayanthi Rao at the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture, City College. The unit is conceptually situated at the Queens Museum, anchoring their year of research within the borough of Queens and connecting to the community-based programs, exhibitions, and initiatives of the museum.

Conversaciones YoU: Raúl Cárdenas Osuna (Torolab) y Guadalupe Maravilla (Tu Co-pensador), presentado por Unit 25

Presentado por Unit 25: Construyendo Cultura (Escuela de Arquitectura Spitzer), este primer Year of Uncertainty Talk (Conversaciones YoU) profundizará en las prácticas artísticas de Raúl Cárdenas Osuna (Torolab) y Guadalupe Maravilla (YoU Co-pensador). Ambos artistas se involucran con distintas formas de responder al trauma y la violencia: Raúl Cárdenas Osuna en su natal Tijuana, México, donde fundó el colectivo de artistas Torolab en 1995, y Guadalupe Maravilla en el área de la ciudad de Nueva York, a donde llegaron en la década de 1980 como un niño no acompañado e indocumentado que huyó de la Guerra Civil Salvadoreña y más tarde en su vida luchó y sobrevivió al cáncer. Ambos artistas están involucrados con aspectos de la organización comunitaria directa, la performatividad colectiva y las prácticas escultóricas / espaciales, a menudo aprovechando las oportunidades dentro de los espacios de arte contemporáneo para involucrar sus redes comunitarias y prácticas de curación. Las dos presentaciones serán seguidas por una conversación abierta y preguntas y respuestas. La conversación ha sido comisariada por Vyjayanthi Rao (Profesor adjunto, Escuela de Arquitectura de Spitzer).

En un acto de descentralización del dominio del idioma inglés, este programa se presentará en español con servicios de interpretación español-inglés. La charla será grabada y compartida en el canal de YouTube del Queens Museum con subtítulos en inglés.

Unit 25: Construyendo Cultura es una unidad de investigación de un año impartida por Nandini Bagchee y Vyjayanthi Rao en la Escuela de Arquitectura Bernard and Anne Spitzer, City College. La unidad está situada conceptualmente en el Museo de Queens, anclando su año de investigación dentro del distrito de Queens y conectándose con los programas, exposiciones e iniciativas comunitarias del museo.
