Event - Flag-Making for Collective Care

Flag-Making for Collective Care

06.02.21, 6:00 pm

In conjunction with the exhibition Art As Social Action: 10 Years of Social Practice Queens, celebrating the longstanding relationship between the socially engaged Queens College MFA program and the Queens Museum, we are pleased to host Flag-Making for Collective Care.

Artist, educator, and SPQ alum Jeff Kasper will lead this creative workshop based on his series of prototypes for white flags currently on view at the museum and in anticipation of 2 new public artworks to premiere in Queens and Staten Island as part of Not a Monolith. The workshop will involve story sharing through short digital collage, visual brainstorming, and wellness-focused participatory design activities. No prior experience with digital art making necessary.

Access and Audience:

Live Captions will be available. A digital workbook and link to use a collaborative drawing tool will be provided before the event. The artist recommends guests to participate via tablets or desktop computers, but welcomes any form of participation that feels right.

This event will be grounded in queer/disability justice principles, and welcomes QTBIPOC folks to register. This event is multi generational, geared towards teens and adults.

The workshop will take place on Zoom.

More about the workshop:

Kasper will share found images and texts part of his personal archive as a jumping off point for collaboratively designing digital “flags” and graphics that participants can keep, print, and share on their own social media channels if they wish. The workshop serves as a slow and fun dialogue on self care, well-being, and community building during this time of pandemic and crisis.

This event is co-sponsored by Not a Monolith produced by Art-Bridge x Facebook Open Arts x We The Culture. Not a Monolith is a public art and professional development initiative aiming to amplify a diversity of Black voices and perspectives of Black artists.
