Event - Corona Youth Music Orchestra

Corona Youth Music Orchestra

12.12.15, 4:00 pm

Celebrate the season of lights with the Corona Youth Music Project, in a showcase of all our ensembles: around 200 children presenting holidays music and compositions by Leopold Mozart, Jean Sibelius, Tchaikovsky and John Williams.

The Corona Children’s Orchestra will present an outer space-themed selection, including the theme from Star Wars, while the Corona Youth Orchestra’s selections include Leopold Mozart’s charming “Toy Symphony”, and Finnish composer Jean Sibelius’ “Andante Festivo”, a piece composed to be broadcast via short wave radio from Finland to the 1939 New York World’s Fair at the site of this concert. This will be the first time after its premiere that “Andante Festivo” will be heard at the former grounds of the World’s Fair.

The Corona Youth Music Project (Nucleo Corona) was founded in 2010 in Corona (Queens, NY) to empower youth, fight poverty, and promote social inclusion through music education and performance.  It is the first organization in Queens that is part of “El Sistema,” a global movement of music for social change.  Through their participation in the Orchestra, children are given the opportunity to become valued assets to the Corona community.
