Community Forum & Opening Reception for “The Faces of Islam”

LaGuardia Performing Arts Center (LPAC) and LaGuardia Community College (LAGCC) present an interactive theater demonstration and Community Forum, followed by the opening reception of the photography exhibition “€œFaces of Islam“€ which will remain on view from February 7 – March 1, 2015.

Created by LaGuardia Community College photography students, the exhibit features over 30 photographs of LaGuardia students, staff and family members, as well as New York City politicians and community leaders who practice the Islamic faith.

“€œThe Faces of Islam”€ exhibition presents to you the perspective of a representative group of diverse community college students,”€ said Scott Sternbach, director of the photography department at LaGuardia. “€œThese teachers, artists, airline pilots, community activists, attorneys and myriad of others joined with our students and alums to share the bond of creative photography and in the process met as human beings working together for a common cause; to be seen as individuals and not as stereotypes.”€

Schedule of Events

3-4:30pm: Utilizing theater to stimulate group-talk, the Community Forum is focused on perceptions of Islamic identity in post 9/11 America and the various life experiences of the American Muslim community.

4:30-6pm:  Opening Reception for  “Faces of Islam,” an exhibition which features portraits of local New Yorkers, as captured by LAGCC students and faculty over two semesters.

Community Forum produced by LaGuardia Performing Arts Center and the “Beyond Sacred year. Beyond Sacred: Unthinking Muslim Identity is an interdisciplinary project that intends to create a cohesive cultural program that illuminates life experiences of culturally identified Muslims in 21st century, post 9/11 New York City.
