Join us for a conversation between artist Aliza Nisenbaum and curator Pablo León de la Barra moderated by exhibition curator Hitomi Iwasaki celebrating Nisenbaum’s Queens, Lindo y Querido and exploring the social, temporal and aesthetic dimensions of portrait painting as a medium.

About the Speakers:

Pablo León de la Barra is Curator at Large, Latin America at the Salomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation, New York. He was born in Mexico City in 1972. He has a Ph.D. in Histories and Theories from the Architectural Association, London. He was previously the Guggenheim UBS MAP Curator, Latin America (2013-2016), Director of Casa França-Brasil, Rio de Janeiro (2015-16) and Chief Curator at MAC Niteroi, Río de Janeiro (2017-20). He was the founder and co-curator of the 1st and 2nd Bienal Tropical, San Juan, Puerto Rico (2011 and 2016), co-curator of SITE Santa Fe Biennial, New Mexico (2016) and curator of the Mexican Pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale. He was awarded the first Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros and Independent Curators International Travel Award for Central America and the Caribbean (2012) in honor of Virginia Pérez-Ratton. León de la Barra is on the advisory boards of the Luis Barragán Foundation, Mexico City; the Caribbean Art Initiative, Basel; CIFO, Miami; and Nasher Sculpture Prize, Dallas.

Aliza Nisenbaum paints portraits that are the manifestation of exchanges with her subjects taking place over time. Distinct social groups are at the foreground of her work, including immigrants, members of grassroot organizations, and health workers. She engages with these groups on various levels, sharing resources, skills, and ultimately, social representation. Recently her exhibition at the Tate Liverpool (2021) featured a series of portraits of UK healthcare workers, and featured subway workers in a public mural project for the Art on the Underground Commission in London (2019). Previous solo shows include Anton Kern Gallery, New York, NY (2019) and the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, MN (2017). Nisenbaum is currently completing commission work for Queens Museum and Delta Air Lines (Terminal C at LaGuardia Airport) representing a large group of professionals in the industry. Nisenbaum’s work has been included in notable group exhibitions including: Gwangju Biennale, South Korea (April 2023); the Museu de Arte de São Paulo, Brazil (2020); the Drawing Center, New York, NY (2020); the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA (2019) and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA (2018). She has also presented her work at The Whitney Biennial (2017); the Biennial of the Americas, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver, CO (2015); and XV Rufino Tamayo Painting Biennial, Mexico City, D.F (2012). Her work is found in collections including the Tate, The Hirshhorn Museum, The Kemper Museum of Art, The San Diego Museum of Art, The Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among many other private and public collections.

Pablo León de la Barra es curador general de América Latina en el Museo y Fundación Salomon R. Guggenheim, Nueva York. Nació en la Ciudad de México en 1972. Tiene un Ph.D. en Historias y Teorías de la Architectural Association, Londres. Anteriormente fue curador Guggenheim UBS MAP, América Latina (2013-2016), director de Casa França-Brasil, Río de Janeiro (2015-16) y curador jefe de MAC Niteroi, Río de Janeiro (2017-20). Aliza Nisenbaum pinta retratos que son la manifestación de intercambios con sus sujetos que se producen a lo largo del tiempo.
