Hybrid Alternos is a collaboration between Carmelita Tropicana and Ela Troyano. The performance is a tale of sci-fi denizens, Hye, a hybrid human hyena, and Bottina, an android, both classified illegal. The work combines monologues and interactive performance addressing the disappearance of the species, current issues of immigration, and xenophobic discourse.
Alien Skins will be on view April 25 through May 26, 2019 at Leslie-Lohman Museum in conjunction with the exhibition Mundos Alternos: Art and Science Fiction in the Americas on view at Queens Museum from April 7 through August 18, 2019.
This program is free and open to the public. RSVP is required.
Carmelita Tropicana has been performing in New York’s downtown arts scene since the 1980s, straddling the worlds of performance art and theater in the U.S., Latin America and Europe with her irreverent humor, subversive fantasy and bilingual puns. Tropicana has taught at numerous universities and sits on the Board of Directors at Performance Space 122 and NYFA.
Ela Troyano is an interdisciplinary filmmaker. Her projects bring together different aesthetic histories and genres: downtown New York avant-garde film and performance, queer cinema, Cuban-American cinema-in-exile and Latina film and video.
