Looking Ahead: A New Future for Queens Museum

Looking Ahead: A New Future for Queens Museum

From Renovation to Transformation

We are transforming Queens Museum into an intergenerational and multilingual civic institution to serve the evolving needs of our borough and our city. Impactful capital improvements and the creation of a children’s museum rooted in arts and culture (Suna Children’s Museum) will transform the space into a vital hub for contemporary art, education, and community programming. Known equally for its innovative exhibitions and its can’t-miss cultural celebrations, our institution will become an essential community resource.

Capstone renovations will provide accessible, comfortable amenities across the building while creating the capacity to program our full footprint for the first time in our organization’s history. New and expanded programs, including those in the Suna Children’s Museum, will fill the renovated building year-round.

Over 100,000 square feet of state-of-the-art space will be brought to life, featuring:

  • The new Suna Children’s Museum
  • Dedicated programming hub for older adults
  • Fully accessible auditorium for events and live programs
  • New galleries and storage for the Museum’s permanent collection
  • Overhaul of visitor amenities, including accessible Welcome Desks and Museum-wide artist-designed seating
  • Isamu Noguchi-inspired outdoor playscape
  • Critical roof replacement, improved HVAC systems, and modernized office space for staff

This campaign will allow QM to expand its programs, reach new audiences, and create an inclusive and accessible Museum — all while building a more sustainable organization.

The Suna Children’s Museum at Queens Museum

The Suna Children’s Museum will be a multilingual intergenerational family learning space focused on art and culture. It will include interactive exhibits and hands-on activities that promote exploration and creativity. We will empower families to engage in collaborative experiences, ensuring every visitor feels a sense of belonging.

Interactive exhibits and activities at The Suna Children’s Museum will promote exploration and creativity, with programs divided across four distinct zones:

  • MAKE, a cutting-edge makerspace that connects making, design, fashion, and architecture.
  • PLAY, a multifaceted indoor play area where children can engage in imaginative play, storytelling, and performance.
  • INTERACT, a technology-based space encouraging exploration and innovation by blending traditional crafts with modern technology.
  • GROW, a hybrid indoor/outdoor setting that explores climate change, food justice, and the interconnectedness of art and nature.
  • Chill Pockets (or sensory rooms) will also be available throughout the Museum for rest & recuperation.

Together, we’re building a space for children to experiment boldly, follow their questions, and make meaning through hands-on exploration.
