TIMESEED with artist-in-residence Gan Golan in Gowanus

ArtBuilt Mobile Studio in the Park

We are thrilled to announce the opening of ArtBuilt Mobile Studio In The Park’s Thomas Greene Park residency: TIMESEED with artist-in-residence Gan Golan!

ArtBuilt Mobile Studio In The Park launched Gan’s TIMESEED project on August 24th with a Flying Seeds DIY inflatables workshop, the unveiling of the Seed Exhibit in the mobile studio, and free seed giveaway from City Growers. Over the course of the next month the public is invited to a series of workshops, open studio time, storytelling, and more on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays from 2-6pm, through September 30th (unless otherwise noted).

TIMESEED is an intergenerational public art project by artist-in-residence Gan Golan that invites Gowanus residents to gather community stories and share visions for a just future, and send them through time to coming generations. What do you want to share with The Future?

Date: August 15 – September 30, 2019
Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays: 2-6pm

Location: Thomas Greene Park in Gowanus, Brooklyn
*look for the mobile studio!

Upcoming event highlights include:

Aug.31: Legacy Day – “Share your Seeds of Wisdom” (seniors welcome)
Sept. 7/8: Time Seeds – Build lasercut 3D seed sculptures and time capsules
Sept. 14: Future Day – “Share you Seeds of Hope” +  Music, Performances, and Speakers (youth welcome)
Sept. 20: Youth Climate Strike – all over NYC!
Sept. 28: Closing Ceremomy at Thomas Greene Park

TIMESEED will feature an exhibit of seeds from all over the world, art builds for the Climate Strike, artmaking activities, and neighborhood storytelling. Together with community members, we will create our own “seeds of wisdom” and “seeds of hope” with some of Gowanus’ oldest and youngest residents while listening to the stories they bring with them and their vision for the world they are fighting for. These stories will be combined into 3-Dimensional seed sculptures we create together. At the end of the project, the seeds containing our stories will be dispersed into the community as historical archives.

In addition to the public, open studio days, artist-in-residence Gan Golan is partnering with 350.org to produce two weekends of art builds (September 7/8  and September 14/15 @ 10am-6pm) to support the International Children’s Climate Strike that will take place on September 20th, 2019.

These art builds will provide free materials and support staff to help local kids create personalized protest signs, banners and tee-shirts. The builds will be open to the general public, but our outreach is focused on school-aged children who have experienced the effects of climate change directly (ex: Hurricane Sandy in Red Hook and Gowanus), but who might not know about the Climate Strike and/or could benefit from working with activist/artists to create their own personalized protest materials and signs.

Please spread the word to local families and youth!!

We look forward to seeing you at the ArtBuilt Mobile Studio in the Park in Gowanus in the coming weeks!

ArtBuilt Mobile Studio In The Park’s TIMESEED with artist-in-residence Gan Golan is produced specifically for Thomas Greene Park in partnership with ArtBuilt, NYC Parks, Queens Museum, Gowanus Canal Conservancy, Arts Gowanus, Textile Arts, Arts & Democracy, NOCD-NY, and Friends of Thomas Greene Park.

ArtBuilt Studio in the Park is a six-week residency program that provides an artist or artist collective use of our 150-square-foot mobile studio space in a public park for a community-engaged art project. Operating out of Flushing Meadows Corona Park since its inception in 2015, ArtBuilt Studio in the Park programming has expanded to all five boroughs of New York City in 2018 and 2019 with the help of this prestigious grant.

This project is supported in part by the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs.
