Sydney Shen and Asif Mian receive the Queens Museum-Jerome Foundation Fellowship for Emerging Artists

The Queens Museum is thrilled to announce the artists selected for the 2019-2020 Queens Museum-Jerome Foundation Fellowship, Sydney Shen and Asif Mian! The QM-Jerome Foundation Fellowship for Emerging Artists was established to help emerging visual artists in New York City. Two artists are selected to receive stipends of 20,000 USD each; the opportunity to develop and exhibit a project at Queens Museum; and professional development support from Queens Museum curators and other programming staff members.

Sydney Shen (b. 1989, Woodbridge, NJ) lives and works in New York. Shen completed her BFA at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, New York in 2011. In 2010 she studied in the class of Josephine Pryde at Universität der Künste, Berlin. 

 

 Her work has been exhibited at venues such as: Gallery Vacancy, Shanghai (2021); Sophie Tappeiner, Vienna (2019); New Museum, New York (2019);  Aldea, Bergen, Norway (2019); Invisible Exports, New York (2019); Deitch Projects, New York (2018); American Medium, New York (2018); Motel, Brooklyn (2017); Aike Dellarco, Shanghai (2017); Springsteen, Baltimore (2017); and Interstate Projects, Brooklyn (2016). Upcoming exhibitions include Museum het Valkhof, Nijmegen, Netherlands (2021); Deutsches Hygiene-Museum, Dresden (2021). Shen was a 2019-2020 artist-in-residence at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Workspace program. Shen is co-author of Perfume Area, a book of prose-poetry published by Ambient Press, New York (2015).

Asif Mian (b. ​Jersey City, NJ), earned an MFA from ​Columbia University in 201​8. Mian holds a B.A. ​in Studio Art & B.S. in Biology (Genetics) ​from ​Drew University, and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2018.Working at the intersection of drawing, sculpture, video, and performance, Asif Mian’s practice explores the roles that ritual, masculinity, power, and violence have in society. 

Selected solo exhibitions include RAF’s Red Plaid, CRUSH Curatorial, New York (2019) and a forthcoming exhibition Asif Mian: Everyday/Chiasma, curated by Tausif Noor, Fjord Gallery, Philadelphia. Selected group exhibitions include Lucky Draw, Sculpture Center, Queens (2019); Always, Already, Haunting, “disss-co,” Haunt, curated by the Whitney ISP Helena Rubenstein fellows, The Kitchen, New York, NY (2019); The Shed: Open Call, The Shed, New York (2019); Queens International 2018: Volumes, The Queens Museum, Queens (2018), and the forthcoming exhibition Beyond Geographies at BRIC, Brooklyn. Mian recently completed a WORKSPACE residency at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.
