Queens International 2013 features a wide range of exciting performances, workshops, and participatory programs. The programs below require donations from you as well as advanced planning, so take a look, register and gather materials.

artCommons in Jackson Heights

artCommons is an experimental, free-of-charge, art-sharing project intended for multiple locations throughout New York, carefully tailored to the characteristics of each respective community. The artCommons pilot project will launch in Jackson Heights, and is a participant project in Queens International 2013.

Artists and residents in Jackson Heights are invited to be part of this exciting art-sharing project, in which artists register 1- 3 artworks to lend to their neighbors. Residents must register to borrow these artworks, and are allowed to take them home for a duration of time.

Brooklyn-Queens Borderlands: Virtual Walking Tour on the Panorama

WHAT: Hijacked Panorama tour about the Brooklyn-Queens Border
WHO: Open to all

Using the Panorama as an investigative space, Joseph Heathcott takes visitors on a journey through the Brooklyn-Queens Borderlands. Along the way, we consider the nature, form, and meaning of the border as it threads through the life of the boroughs. The tour will also consider several ‘border scenarios’ in order to speculate on the power of dividing lines, and imagine what would happen if we could move the ancient ‘boundary rock’ to new locations, thereby stretching Queens into new shapes and configurations. Through this tour we hope to recast the Brooklyn-Queens Border, away from a taken-for-granted political divisor to a kind of imaginary space where many things are possible.

Bureau of Borrowed Objects

WHAT: Bring your valued possession to be evaluated, classified, and re-evaluated. 3D facsimile will be made by the artist for display in the show and your original object will be returned to you.
WHO: Open to all

Can’t decide what is valuable in your life? Let artist Cheon Pyo Lee help you. Come to the Bureau of Borrowed Objects to be part of something bigger. Once processed, our object’s facsimile will remain as part of his installation.

Score for Two Dinosaurs

WHAT: Participatory film sound score session
WHO: Everyone who loves dinosaurs! Yes, it’s “Jurassic Park”

You are invited to put on a lab coat, blow into a whistle, throw magnets into the air, and stomp around with cinder blocks taped to your feet together with members from the local Corona Youth Orchestra. Participants will be directed to take an instrument from the dozens of gadgets, party toys, household items, and curios mounted on the walls of the gallery in neat taxonomic rows. Don’t worry, we will rehearse. The corresponding brightly colored, hand-drawn scores, or cue sheets charge the participants with playing their instruments at precise moments indicated by a scrolling timestamp projected on the opposite wall. It’s your noise! Bring the famous movie dinos into life! No music instrument training required.
